LABOUR could be teetering on the edge of an historic split – as up to 100 MPs face being ousted by activists.

Party moderates have been holding talks to break away and set up a new pro EU party.

The group are furious at Jeremy Corbyn’s failure to get a grip on the anti-Semitism crisis or publicly campaign for a second referendum.

And they fear they will fall victim to a massive purge by new left-wing activists who have flooded the party.

Leading MPs including Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper are feared to be among those at risk of deselection, The Daily Mail reported.

In total 100 Labour MPs could face local bids to boot them out – and around a quarter are expected to lose.

It comes amid reports that former Labour leadership contender Chuka Umunna is preparing to lead a group to split from the party this week.

One of the potential splitters has reportedly told colleagues that if they walk away they want to “burn the house down” on their way out.

Moves to deselect MPs do not usually happen until shortly before a general election, next due in 2022.

But Labour’s general secretary Jennie Formby has already begun talks to set on setting the timetable – raising fears a purge is looming.

John McDonnell – Corbyn’s closest ally – yesterday warned Labour MPs not to quit.

He told the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: “It would be like the 1980s. My constituency in Hayes and Harlington, we had a Labour MP join the SDP and we lost the seat to the Conservatives.

“And it basically installed Mrs Thatcher in power for that decade.”
