Experts claim medics were more likely to misdiagnose women because they expect victims to be fat, middle-aged men.

Symptoms were often dismissed as less serious problems such as indigestion or neck pain, leading to many missing out on life-saving treatments.

Even when correctly diagnosed, women were a third less likely to get a crucial test that reveals the extent of the blockage.

Doctors were also more reluctant to dish out drugs such as statins and beta-blockers that cut the risk of a second attack.

The Leeds University team found a woman’s chance of dying within a month was 5.2 per cent, compared to 2.3 per cent for men. Around 200,000 Brits are victims each year.

Lead researcher Chris Gale said   “Our study suggests women are getting a lower standard of care. It’s a mixture of preconceptions about the typical patients and misdiagnosis.

“This can lead to fatal delays. The key to improving survival is getting the right care as early as possible.”

The British Heart Foundation-funded study looked at 700,000 heart attack patients from 233 hospitals.

The BHF’s Prof Sir Nilesh Samani added: “We need to tackle the false perception that heart attacks are only a male health issue.”
