Stan Lee will make a posthumous cameo in the upcoming Avengers 4 following his death on Monday at age 95.

The former top writer at Marvel Comics and its former publisher has been making cameo appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008 when he appeared in Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark and his superhero alter-ego.

Lee has since made cameos in every Marvel Studios film including The Incredible Hulk; the Thor films; the Captain America movies; the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Doctor Strange, Black Panther and most recently Ant-Man And The Wasp earlier this year.

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo earlier this year revealed that Lee filmed multiple cameos in advance.

'So, Stan, typically we try to get him out — he doesn't love to fly — so we try to get him out for his cameos around the same time,' Russo told the BBC via CBR.com.

'So if we have other movies shooting on the same lot that we're on, for instance Ant-Man 2 or Avengers 4, we group his cameos together and then move him from one set to the next and kind of get him through his cameos in one day,' he added.

Lee in his latest Ant-Man And The Wasp cameo played a pedestrian whose vehicle was shrunk by Wasp.

'Well the '60s were fun, but now I'm paying for it,' Lee said making an apparent recreational drug reference.

Lee also made a cameo in Avengers: Infinity War that became the first superhero film to earn more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

He appeared as the driver of Peter Parker's school bus as students watched Ebony Maw's ship arriving in the sky above New York City.

'What's the matter with you kids? You never seen a spaceship before?,' Lee said.

Avengers 4 featuring Lee's posthumous cameo will be released on May 3, 2019. 

Lee collaborated with the later writer-artist Steve Ditko who died in June at age 90 to co-create Spider-Man and Doctor Strange.

He also collaborated with the late great comic book artist Jack Kirby, who died in 1994 at age 76, to co-create the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and the Hulk.

Lee was editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics when Captain America, co-created by Kirby and Joe Simon, was revived in March 1964 in The Avengers #4 comic book that also featured Iron Man, Ant-Man, Wasp and Thor.

Captain America actor Chris Evans mourned the loss of Lee on Twitter.

'There will never be another Stan Lee. For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy. He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives. Excelsior!!,' Evans tweeted referencing Lee's closing signature line from his Stan Lee's Soapbox editorials since the 1960s.

Online tributes: Hollywood stars took to social media to pay tribute to Lee

The New York City native and pride of Stony Brook in Long Island served a stint in the Army during World War II, writing for training films.

Lee was declared dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Monday in Los Angeles, according to Kirk Schenck, an attorney for Lee's daughter, J.C. Lee.

He is survived by his daughter and only child Joan Celia, known as 'J.C.'.

His wife Joan died in July last year after suffering complications from a stroke. The pair had been married for 70 years at the time of her death.
