BOOZY soldiers could face a court martial if they over-indulge this Christmas.

The move is the latest initiative to tackle alcohol abuse in the military. Nearly 70,000 serving members of the Armed Forces are heavy or risky drinkers, a study found.

Troops from the 1st battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, based at Mooltan Barracks in Tidworth, Wilts, got written orders to go easy.

The Alcohol Abuse warning states: “Drunkenness and offences caused by drink continue to form a substantial part of all offences in the Army. All ranks are warned of the dangers of heavy drinking.”

Similar warnings have been issued to other units. A Royal Army Medical Corps report found 63 per cent of squaddies were boozing too much. But the study warned heavy drinking was so embedded that “any intervention will take the form of a war of attrition”.

An MoD spokesman said: “We regularly issue healthcare guidance, which includes drinking in moderation.”
