RESIDENTS in some of Britain’s poshest neighbourhoods are shelling out on private police patrols – because cash-strapped forces can’t put officers on the front line.

Terrified locals in well-heeled Belgravia, London, and Chigwell, Essex, have turned to private security firm My Local Bobby – where each customer has a named officer looking out for them.

Private police officers at TM Eye, who run the My Local Bobby scheme, have secured more than 400 prosecutions[/caption<br />The company – staffed almost entirely by Scotland Yard veterans – even offers a “meet and greet” service to walk scared clients home in the dark.<br />My Local Bobby managing director David McKelvey said: “The bobbies have got nightly arrangements to meet the children because of concerns about their safety.<br />“There’s a fear out there about crime happening and there’s been a number of nasty knife robberies in a particular area of Chigwell.<br />“The biggest concern that people have is about burglaries and car crime. Most of the people that hire us are looking to protect their homes, their valuables and their cars.</p>

For up to £200-a-month clients are given a direct hotline to a local officer, covering up to 250 houses, who they can track on an iPad.

TM Eye, the firm behind the service, is believed to have brought more private convictions than any other organisation except for the RSPCA.

In two years, the company has successfully convicted more than 400 criminals for fraud, intellectual property theft and other offences.
