Pothole claims from motorists have doubled to a five-year high, while investment in maintaining motorways and A-roads has plunged, official figures show.

Data obtained from Highways England following a Freedom of Information request show it spent £209.3million on road maintenance in 2017/18.

This is a drop of £68million – or a quarter – from two years previously. Over the same period the number of potholes filled in by the agency has surged by more than half from 10,878 to 16,642.

Despite this, the number of compensation claims lodged by motorists whose vehicles have been damaged on England’s national road network have more than doubled from 527 to 1,089. Only around half of these were successful, with Highways England paying out £164,341 in total.

A Highways England spokesman said: ‘Since April 2015 we have resurfaced over 3,000 miles of our network and plan to resurface over 1,000 miles this financial year.’
