New photo Mum’s terror as faulty Argos toy hoverboard ‘blew up her car just seconds before she leapt to safety’

A MUM says a faulty hoverboard blew up her car seconds after she leapt to safety.

Stacey Cordrey, 29, heard a bang and noticed thick smoke billowing from her boot.

She had stored a £149 hoverboard she bought from Argos in there for her son.

Seconds later flames burst through the back seat of the VW Golf.

Stacey said: “I pulled over and jumped out just in time before the windows blew out. Within seconds the whole car was on fire.

“I’m lucky to be alive. There was nothing else in the boot that could’ve caught fire.

Stacey says she’s lucky to be alive after leaping to safety just before the car went up in flames

“The hoverboard must have been faulty otherwise it wouldn’t have caught fire.”

She added: “There’s nothing left of my car now.

“One of the firefighters told me they were 99 per cent certain it was the hoverboard that caused the fire.”

Stacey bought the Zinc toy hours earlier for son Ritchie’s 11th birthday this Sunday.

Stacey says the £149 hoverboard was the only thing in the boot that could have caused the fire

She left it in the boot with bags of clothes for her kids.

Also lost were a new £150 Samsung J6 phone and £140 of vouchers, which were in her bag in the front that she left behind in the panic on Monday evening.

Kids Ritchie, ten, Jamie nine, and Sammy eight, now have no Christmas presents.

Stacey, of Chatham, Kent, said: “I was never sure about buying hoverboards because I’ve heard so many stories about them exploding.

Argos are investigating the incident but say that all boards are tested to the correct standard

“Argos is telling me they take great care in their product, but they obviously don’t.”

An Argos spokesperson said: “We are investigating. We’ve received no other complaints.”

Maker Zinc said: “All our boards are tested to the UL standard. We are working with Miss Cordrey to investigate this incident.”
