A TEXAS man facing 99 years in prison after an ex-girlfriend accused him of carving an “X” into her chest has been cleared by a selfie.
Christopher Precopia, 22, was stunned when cops arrested him while he was working at a lumberyard in Georgetown, Williamson County, last September.
He was accused of burglary with intent to commit other crimes, the New York Post reports.
Precopia had no clue why he was being arrested, but he later found out his ex-girlfriend from high school had gone to the cops with a fabricated tale.
“I had no idea why everything was happening, and I was lost,” he recalled this week.
His ex alleged that Precopia broke into her home in Temple and sliced an X into her chest with a box cutter.
So cops hauled him off to Williamstown County Jail and released him only after his family posted a £117,000 ($150,000) bond.
Luckily for the lumberyard worker, however, on the night of the alleged attack, Precopia was actually 65 miles away at a hotel in Austin with his mum, Erin Precopia.
And, he had taken a selfie of himself with his family that evening, which he posted on social media.
“By the grace of God, [the accuser] said it happened on the day when I can say totally, 100 per cent, where he was at,” Erin Precopia said.
He had a solid alibi, but authorities charged him anyway, something police experts told broadcaster KVUE might have been presumptuous.
Generally, police interview suspects before charging them with a crime, the station explained.
When Precopia asked what he was being arrested for, police officers said, “something along the lines of, ‘don’t act like you don’t know what we’re talking about’,” his lawyer, Rick Flores, told ABC News in America.
He was charged with first-degree felony burglary of a habitation, with intent to commit additional felonies, according to the police affidavit.
The offence was punishable by up to 99 years if convicted, Flores added.
Cops finally dropped the charges against Precopia nine months after his arrest when his lawyer took the alibi evidence – the selfie – to Bell County prosecutors.
His accuser’s identity is not being made public because she is not being charged with a crime.
She would later admit to Temple police that she reported Precopia because she had a rocky relationship with him several years earlier.

“Most of the time, we deal with grey matters,” Flores said, adding, “it’s not normally black or white. But this is one of those cases where I could definitely prove he did not commit this offence.”
Flores said that the family has not been contacted by Precopia’s accuser, and that he believed she “staged it all”, including smashing a vase and throwing items around her home to make it look like there had been a struggle.
The young man’s mum said the arrest had severely affected her son, and that “he’s not the same kid he was a year and a half ago, which breaks my heart.”
