JOSE MOURINHO may just need another wish at the top of his Christmas list.
Manchester United’s manager is aiming to see his side in a Champions League position by the time Big Ben’s bells chime on December 31 to bring in the new year.
But having failed to score against a beleaguered Crystal Palace side at Old Trafford, Mourinho may just be hoping for a bit much this year.
United have eight games remaining of 2018 to achieve that feat.
It includes winnable games against Southampton, Cardiff, Huddersfield and Bournemouth but also sees United take on Unai Emery’s impressive Arsenal and travel to Anfield.
But with this lethargic performance as a gauge, that will be one mighty task.
If they’re struggling to break down a Palace side that’s not won in EIGHT league matches and poses little threat without former United man Wilfred Zaha then hope is all they have.
United improved drastically after 15 minutes in the company of Mourinho but too often it takes that time at half-time to spark his team into life.
This was just another reminder to Ed Woodward and his men upstairs how Mourinho has struggled to inspire his troops.
It comes after a week when Mourinho had singled out Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial as “spoilt”.

United’s chief was able to forget the dismal derby defeat to City with a perfectly-timed international break and had all his big-name players back at his disposal.
Paul Pogba, Martial and Romelu Lukaku had recovered from injuries and were supposed to be ready for duty.
Before being hooked midway through second half, Pogba lumbered around the field and looked either half fit or half interested as his touch let him down and his passing accuracy was off.
Yet it is Lukaku who is the biggest problem for Mourinho.
He is the £75million man Mourinho needs to get them on a winning running over the festive fixtures and his ten-game goal drought ticked up to 11 against Palace.
Mourinho headed to Belgium during the international break to try and find out why Lukaku has five goals in four games for his country but struggles for form with his club.
Despite all the European politicians scratching their heads over Brexit in Brussels, it is Mourinho who is most confused.
Lukaku had just 10 touches in the opening 45 minutes at Old Trafford, and that was when he was most affective.
Mourinho raised his arms in disappointment as Lukaku lacked the energy and enthusiasm that he was looking for.
Moneyman Mourinho will, once again, look to the transfer window but there’s only so much cash he can throw at the problem.
By then, though, it’s unlikely Mourinho will have the Christmas wish he hoped for.
