New photo Joel Edgerton reveals what it was like directing Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman in Boy Erased

His latest film, Boy Erased, is continuing to attract Oscar Buzz.

And Joel Edgerton has revealed what it was like directing 'masters' Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman in the film.

The 44-year-old Australian actor spoke to KIIS FM's Kyle and Jackie O recently, admitting that with Gladiator star Russell, 54, he had to eat his words.

'I was a little trepidacious about directing two masters,' Joel admitted.

'In all honesty, they're role models and heroes to me, as people who sort of forged a way to Hollywood.'

He added: 'And as a male actor, identifying with Russell, I think he's one of the greatest leading male actors of all time. The idea of telling Russell to do something different in a take,' he trailed off.

'I was a little trepidacious about directing two masters': Joel went on to say that giving Russell (pictured) and Nicole direction was 'necessary' at times, but laughed when he recalled a story about Russell

Joel went on to say that giving Russell and Nicole direction was 'necessary' at times, but laughed when he recalled a story about Russell.

'There's a great moment where I said to Russell, "on this next take, can you do a bit of this" and I gave him a direction and he said to me, "alright, I will do that." But he said, "you know, I just literally did everything you just asked."

Joel added: 'And I was like, "no I don't think you did." And he was like, "trust me, I did. You go back and look at it."

'And I went back and looked at the monitor and he was absolutely right.'

Joel said the particular scene in the film was when Russell's character's son comes out.

'That take is in the movie, I had to really eat my words,' Joel said.

Joel directs and stars in the movie, which stars Lucas Hedges as 18-year-old Jared Eamons, who is enrolled into a gay conversion therapy program by his baptist parents.

Nicole Kidman plays Nancy Eamons, Jared's conflicted mother and the wife of Russell's Baptist character Marshall Eamons.

While Nancy loves her son, she struggles to come to terms with his homosexuality.

Joel recently told News.com.au that he hopes the film will shed light on the extent of gay conversion therapy and become a 'great conversation starter'.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
