FLOYD MAYWEATHER has reiterated that a potential fight with UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov must happen in the boxing ring.

After Nurmagomedov defeated rival Conor McGregor at UFC 229 in October, the undefeated Russian called out the five-weight boxing world champion Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather, 41, seemed keen on the bout, but claimed the fight must happen under boxing rules, while Nurmagomedov, 30, wanted to implement a two fight deal that would see the return bout take place in the cage.

However, Mayweather, who was last seen defeating former two-weight UFC champion McGregor, 30, in August 2017, confirmed to TMZ Sports that Nurmagomedov will have to fight on his terms.

Mayweather said: “They came to me talking about the Khabib fight.“Khabib called me out, I didn’t call Khabib out.

“They said it has to happen in the octagon and I said, ‘You just tell me where Khabib has made nine figures before in the octagon.’

“If he hasn’t made nine figures, he’s not the A side. I’m the A side, so if you guys want the fight to happen, you must come my way. My way, my rules.”

UFC president Dana White revealed on ESPN ‘Get Up’ that he had a meeting with Mayweather to discuss a fight with his lightweight champion.

The UFC boss later spoke to TMZ Sports and claimed he is interested in a fight with Mayweather, however, he will not allow Nurmagomedov to box the American, like McGregor did.

White said: “Listen, if Mayweather wants to fight, come fight.

In spite of Mayweather seeming open to a fight with Nurmagomedov, ‘Money’ has been in the headlines in relation to another fight not involving a boxer.

Mayweather shocked the fight world when it was announced he would be fighting the undefeated 20-year-old Nasukawa on New Years Eve in Tokyo, Japan.

Japanese MMA promotion Rizin Fight Federation are set to promote the contest – however, the rules, weight, and rounds had yet to be finalised.

In a turn of events, Mayweather took to Instagram to call off the fight – remarkably claiming he ‘never agreed’ to fight Nasukawa in a televised bout in the first place.

However, Mayweather has since announced his comeback fight with Nasukawa will take place, on the original New Years Eve date in Japan’s capital, in a nine minute boxing exhibition.
