THE CHASE fans fumed on Twitter after the show’s theme tune changed to promote the John Lewis Christmas advert.
Viewers were left baffled yesterday when ITV replaced the familiar music on their biggest programmes and they continued to moan today after hearing The Chase’s new piano riff.
One viewer said online: “Not liking the new version of the theme tune #TheChase @ITVChase”
Another person said the channel had gone mad and wrote: “ITV seemed to have ‘festived’ all their theme music up! The Chase, Corrie and This Morning. They’ve gone all plinky plonky.”
Another person groaned: “If I read one more tweet about the sodding theme tune………”
Emmerdale was the first of ITV’s show to depart from its traditional theme tune by having its iconic opening played on the piano instead yesterday, with Coronation Street following suit.
ITV worked with John Lewis to create piano versions of their theme tunes as an ode to Sir Elton John.
Sir Elton is the star of this year’s John Lewis ad, which sees him playing a piano before we’re taken on a journey through his life in music.
The ad, called The Boy and the Piano, starts with a dressing-gown clad Sir Elton gently tapping out the opening bars to Your Song – his first major hit, released in 1970.
Viewers are then taken through key moments in his life, including stadium tours, travelling on a private jet, playing at his local pub and performing at a school.
It ends with four-year-old Elton running down stairs on Christmas morning, unwrapping a gift of a piano given to him by his grandmother – a present that changed his life forever.
We then see Sir Elton playing the final few notes of Your Song, reflecting on his career.
At each stage of his life the performance of Your Song is a recording of Sir Elton’s voice from that time.
The 71-year-old superstar is currently on a Farewell Tour around the US.
Sir Elton, now married to David Furnish, features in the present-day scenes, while five actors take on the role of him at various stages of his life.

A stadium scene based on an Elton John gig in Portland, US was entirely recreated using computer-generated imagery.
While other scenes have been based onphotos or recordings throughout the singer’s career.
John Lewis looked at more than 300 scripts before selecting the story and contacting Elton John’s management.
