ARMED cops could be sent out on foot patrol in the most violent areas of lawless London to combat gangs, the Met Police revealed.
But Commissioner Cressida Dick insisted the patrols would be “very short” and only undertaken in “extreme circumstances”.

The proposed policy change comes amid a wave of gang violence that has contributed to the capital’s murder toll of more than 120 this year.
Last night Assistant Commissioner Sir Stephen House said armed patrols would be a temporary tactic in areas “where we have intelligence that serious violence is imminent”.
He added: “Any deployments would be done in consultation with local policing commanders and after a community impact assessment had been carried out.”
But critics told The Times that putting more firearms on the streets would simply incite more violence, not quash it.

They may also alienate communities in areas like Tottenham in North London and Newham in East London.
Lord Harris of Haringey, the former head of a Met Police watchdog, said: “It will be seen as provocative.
It will inspire fear rather than reassurance. It will hinder community confidence.”
