Tottenham Hotspur's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted being more than twice the drink-drive limit when he was stopped in the early hours by police in central London.

The 31-year-old Frenchman, who captains the north London side, admitted a charge of drink driving at Westminster magistrates Court today.

Lloris, a father-of-two, was driving his 2018-plate Porsche Panamera along Gloucester Place, Marylebone, at around 2am on August 24 when he was pulled over during a routine stop by police.

Prosecutor Henry Fitch said police in an unmarked car spotted Lloris' vehicle driving at 15mph in a 30mph zone.

He also veered his car 'towards parked vehicles' before correcting himself. When police stopped the vehicle, they discovered vomit and said Lloris had to be helped from the car.

The court heard Lloris provided a sample containing 80 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit in England and Wales is 35 microgrammes.

The Spurs and France captain spent a night in a cell at Charing Cross police station after failing the breath test just a month after claiming football's most coveted prize.

Defending, David Sonn said Lloris' 'spectacular fall from grace was not lost' on the goalkeeper.

The court heard the goalkeeper had been dining in a restaurant and was showered with drinks from fellow diners.

Today the footballer was met by a scrum of photographers who surrounded the Frenchman as he walked inside Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Lloris, wearing a dark suit and no tie, was flanked by two members of his entourage as he made his way from his vehicle into the court, confronted by dozens of photographers and video journalists.

Lloris faced one charge of driving a motor vehicle when his alcohol level was above the limit. Because of his guilty plea, he faces an automatic driving ban and will likely be given a hefty fine.

Lloris was not picked to play for France in the recent United League of Nations games against Germany and Holland. He has signed a new £150,000 per deal with Spurs who are fifth in Premier League under manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Lloris has been with Tottenham since joining from Lyon in 2012, making 207 appearances in the Premier League and keeping 74 clean sheets.

He has grown to be regarded as one of the world's best goalkeepers during his time in England. Lloris has won more than 100 international caps and lifted the World Cup in July, after France beat Croatia 4-2 in the final.

He lives in an exclusive gated £5.9million mansion in Finchley, north London, with his childhood sweetheart Marine.
