New photo West Brom 0-3 Crystal Palace: Goals from Townsend and van Aanholt

Crystal Palace’s Andros Townsend gave a timely reminder of his England quality with two stunning strikes in a comfortable Carabao Cup win for the Premier League side at The Hawthorns.

Townsend, one of only three survivors from Palace’s last league game against Newcastle, set the ball rolling after only six minutes when he collected an Alexander Sorloth touch inside his own half and carried the ball forward unchallenged before firing home in spectacular fashion from 30 yards.

Even the winger seemed taken aback with the power of his dipping left-foot strike, puffing out his cheeks as team-mates ran to celebrate.

But there was plenty more to come for the 27-year-old winger. After Patrick van Aanholt had added a second goal, he took a pass from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and dribbled into the West Brom area, leaving Baggies defender Sam Field kicking at thin air and falling over, before rifling in from an acute angle.

Nearly two years after winning the last of his 13 England caps, Townsend will hope his first goals of the season nudges Gareth Southgate before his next squad is announced for October’s games against Croatia and Spain.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson hadn’t lost to former club Albion since leaving The Hawthorns for the national team job in 2012.

And it didn't look likely on Tuesday night as Palace set the tempo and registered seven efforts on target in the first half alone with He would have been delighted by his side registering seven efforts on target before the interval with Alexander Sorloth testing Boaz Myhill with a couple of headers. The only cloud for the visitors was to see Jairo Riedewald limp off after 21 minutes to be replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

West Brom are riding high in The Championship and their manager Darren Moore made 10 alterations for this cup-tie. Their two best opportunities both fell to James Morrison who shot narrowly wide and then forced Vicente Guiata into a sharp tip-over save.

It was a busy evening for Northern Ireland international Morrison who also clashed heads with Martin Kelly and returned to the field wearing an eye-catching white bandage.

Palace were comfortably the better side. Townsend nearly added a second with a header scrambled off the line and van Aanholt set up Max Meyer with a surging run before the German saw his final shot blocked.

It was the catalyst for Albion to make a triple-change with Moore sending on Chris Brunt, Kyle Edwards and Kyle Howkins after 62 minutes.

It didn't alter the pattern of the game however and van Aanholt capitalised on a slip by 20-year-old Edwards to rifle in Palace's second goal from just inside the box.

For Palace, the volume of work from their players suggested they are taking the Carabao Cup seriously, hopeful it could lead to the first major trophy in the club’s history.
