THOUSANDS of triathletes have been left fuming after a course blunder meant they were forced to run an extra 1.3miles.

Competitors were left puzzled during the race when checking their split times.

They were left even more baffled when they crossed the finish line unhappy with their performances.

But bungling organisers of the AJ Bell London Triathlon – in which telly chef Gordon Ramsay took part – have admitted they didn’t measure the run circuit properly.

Laps as part of the 10km (6.2mile) run route were 550metres (0.34miles) longer than they should have been.

Depending on the triathlon discipline and the number of laps, it meant some of the competitors ended up running 2.2km (1.3miles) further than they should have done.

Many athletes were disappointed to find out that they were forced to run too far

Others did an extra 1.1km (0.68miles).

Ten thousand athletes took part in all the events over August 4 and 5 at the Excel Centre, east London.

Angry triathlete Andrew Cummings thought something was wrong at the time when his GPS watch said he’d run more than 10km.

But he said he was told the watch might have been inaccurate because the run was inside.

Andrew, 36, of Chelmsford, Essex fumed: “I’m extremely disappointed and feel massively let down.

“Running is my strong point of the three legs and I knew I needed to push myself.

“After two laps I checked my watch and thought I was going slow as I was only half way through and realised I was never going to achieve a personal best.

“Psychologically it beat me and I pretty much gave up.

Participants found out that the course was too long once they had finished the race

“Even my parents went to the finish line early thinking I’d be there soon but we’re left waiting because of the extra distance.”

He added: “I am pleased they finally admitted the blunder

“But at a cost of £130 to enter its by no means cheap and I very much I doubt I’ll enter this one again as I have lost all trust in them.”

London Triathlon organisers said: ‘We can confirm that due to human error, the run course lap was 550 metres longer.

Some have said they won’t compete in this race again as they can’t trust the organisers

“We apologise and hope that it did not take away from participants’ enjoyment or achievement.”

Toned Ramsay, 51, took part in the event as part of team relay raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

He didn’t do the run – due to an Achilles injury – but did the cycle and swim.

But his team’s time was affected by the blunder.

Ramsay’s daughter Megan, 20 and son Jack, 18, took part but not in his team.

In previous years Jenson Button, David Hasselholf and Mel C have taken part in the triathlon.
