THERESA May will mark a major Tory shift from Thatcherite policy today by insisting ­people should feel “proud” to live in council houses.

She will say that society, including politicians, should stop looking down on council tenants.

Former PM Margaret Thatcher encouraged them to buy their homes under the right-to-buy scheme.

Critics have blamed the   1980s   policy for leading to a lack of   social housing.

Mrs May now   plans to pledge  an extra   £2billion for social housing over  the next decade.

And in a speech to the National Housing Federation Summit, she will say: “Some residents are ashamed to share the fact their home belongs to a housing association or local authority.

She will add: “I want to see social        housing that is so good, people   are proud to call it their   home.”

Details of the speech were   revealed by the Daily Telegraph, which reports that an   aide insisted the PM still   wants as many Brits as possible on the housing ladder
