New photo SPOTY: Alastair Cook’s odds of winning award slashed from 50/1 to 10/1 after record-breaking farewell

ALASTAIR COOK odds of being named Sports Personality of the Year have tumbled from 50/1 to 10/1 after a record-breaking farewell to international cricket.

England’s highest run scorer also became the fifth highest Test run scorer of all-time in an emotional win over India.

Punters have piled in on the 33-year-old to scoop the award as his odds have drastically shortened.

He finishes his England career with a mammoth 12472 runs to his name at an average of 45.35.

His highest score came against India in 2011, where he struck 294 at Edgbaston.

If Cook wins, it would be a similar to when Ryan Giggs claimed the award in 2009.

The Manchester United legend swooped the prize as a lifetime achievement, following his commitment to football which saw him break records and reach incredible milestones.

But Cook trails Olympian Dina Asher-Smith, England skipper Harry Kane and Tour De France winner Geraint Thomas.

Betfair Spokesperson Katie Baylis said: “Heading into the last test against India, Alistair Cook was 50/1 for SPOTY, but after his heroic last knock, we saw a flood of bets on The Chef and he’s been backed in to 10/1, behind Geraint Thomas who is the 6/4 favourite, Harry Kane at 2/1 and Dina Asher-Smith who is 7/1.”
