THE Liberal Democrats are looking at changing their name in a full rebrand in a desperate bid to woo voters, Vince Cable revealed yesterday.
Ahead of the party’s autumn conference, the leader said he had an “open mind” to renaming the party the “New Liberal Democrats”.
It comes amid party changes to allow non-members to vote and even take the top job after Sir Vince steps down next year.
He told the Telegraph he couldn’t rule out a name change.
He said: “This new enlarged movement that we are creating – if the membership of it wants to change its name, it can change its name.
“If someone wants to stick ‘new’ on the front – I have an open mind on it. British politics is very tribal. There still a lot of tribal loyalty and people find it difficult to move in the British system.

“Changing names is a superficial thing – maybe because I am not a marketing person I don’t understand the importance of it.
“This new enlarged movement that we are creating – if the membership of it wants to change its name, it can change its name, I am not pushing for that.”
The Lib Dem boss said he has held informal discussions with around 18 MPs from the Tories and Labour about creating a new centre-left party.
