New photo Salad Cream WON'T be renamed Sandwich Cream

Heinz has confirmed its controversial plan to change the name of its 'deliciously zingy' Salad Cream to Sandwich Cream will not go ahead.

News of the planned rebrand for the 104-year-old sauce emerged in June, with the food giant insisting its existing name no longer 'fairly represented' how customers used the sauce, with more people choosing to spread it on their sandwiches than drizzle it on salads.

The Grocer said at the time the overhaul was actually an attempt to boost the products youth appeal and win over millennial shoppers, but Heinz's review of potential new names for the product revealed a staggering 87 per cent of shoppers wanted it to stay the same, the brand said today.

Heinz said it 'can't ignore the will of the people', and confirmed the name Salad Cream is 'here to stay'.

Sandwich Cream had been the front runner among a slew of suggested replacements under consideration - including 'Chip Sauce', 'Fish Finger Sauce', and 'Roast Potato Sauce'.

In June it emerged that Heinz was considering renaming the 104-year-old condiment 'Sandwich Cream' (seen right), because the name Salad Cream (seen left) no longer reflected how its customers were using the product

The review was carried out after a study by the brand revealed just 14% of its customers still use the tangy dressing on salads, and that it had become more popular as an accompaniment to tuna, ham or cheese in sandwiches.

Joel Hughes, Senior Brand Manager at Heinz, said: 'We have been truly overwhelmed by the oupouring of love given to Heinz Salad Cream over the summer. From TV debates to conversations around the dinner table, it seems everyone has a real fondness for not only the iconic, zingy flavour of Heinz Salad Cream, but the name too.

'Thousands of you shared your thoughts and suggested new ideas, all of which were considered, but it became clear that the British public wanted to keep Heinz Salad Cream, and any other name just wouldn't do. We can't ignore the will of the people, so Heinz Salad Cream is here to stay.'

The history of Heinz Salad Cream

1914 - Heinz brings Salad Cream to market after eight years in development. It becomes popular with the working classes.

1939-1945 - Is now a kitchen cupboard staple with housewives who use it as a way to enliven bland ration food

1999 - Heinz threatens to discontinue the brand following falling sales due to Britons switching to mayonnaise but it is saved in 2000 after a national outcry.

2010 - Heinz launches a Lemon and Black Pepper version after sales revive as the sauce is lower in fat than mayonnaise.

2014 - Salad Cream turns 100. 40 million bottles are sold every year. There are two lower fat options available - 30% less fat, and 70% less fat.

June 2018 - Heinz reveals it is changing the name of the iconic brand to reflect modern uses for the condiment. The frontrunner is 'Sandwich Cream'

September 2018 - Heinz confirms the name Salad Cream will remain unchanged after a review revealed 87% of customers wanted it to stay

UK sales of the brand dipped 5.4 per cent to £28.8 million last year.

A Heinz spokesman said at the time the potential rebrand was announced: 'As a market leading business, Kraft Heinz continues to audit its portfolio in order to meet the needs of consumers.

'There are consumers now who haven't grown up with the brand in the household and just don't know about the iconic zingy flavour or what to eat it with.'

In 1999, it was revealed that Heinz were about to ditch the brand but once the leak was published it led to a major protest by shoppers and it saved the brand.

The publicity helped sales and Heinz took advantage by relaunching Salad Cream in new-look packs and putting the price up.
