New photo NRL legend Mat Rogers blindsided by AFL star Brian Lake on Australian Survivor

NRL legend Mat Rogers was the firm fan favourite and top pick to win this season of Australian Survivor.

But on Monday's episode, the 42-year-old's winning streak came to an end when he was blindsided by AFL star Brian Lake and series villain Benji Wilson.

Mat, who was dubbed 'The Godfather' thanks to his high position in the tribe, was dumbfounded when his name was read out.

To make matters worse, the father-of-four left with a hidden immunity idol in his pocket.

'I left the game with an idol,' admitted the rugby icon, who was gunning to get sports rival Brian eliminated.

'Yeah, they got me tonight,' he continued. 'I guess I probably got a little bit overconfident maybe.'

While Benji and Brian were able to conspire to get the numbers to boot Mat, the blindside almost bombed when Sharn Coombes randomly decided to play her own immunity idol for Mat instead of herself. 

'Don't play it for Mat!' screamed Benji after she revealed plans to use it on Mat.

'Play it for you! Play it for you!' he urged frantically. 'Don't gamble your life, Sharn. You're getting played.'

A confused Sharn, not knowing that a Mat blindside had been orchestrated behind her back, then responded: 'I'll play it for... myself, then?'

Mat seemed suspicious over the kerfuffle, but still opted not to play his hidden idol, which ultimately led to his downfall.

Brian is best known for his time playing for the Western Bulldogs and Hawthorn Football Club, while Mat is famed for playing for the Cronulla Sharks and NSW Waratahs.
