NEW Desert Island Discs host Lauren Laverne is funnelling part of her BBC wages through a private company.

She is using a firm she set up in January 2016 four years after the Beeb vowed to end the practice.

It allows stars to pay 18 per cent corporation tax on a portion of their salary instead of 45 per cent income tax, while the BBC avoids paying National Insurance.

Recent accounts show Laverne, 40, who works almost exclusively for the BBC, paid herself dividends of £213,000 from her company Duckie and George which has £264,000 in the bank.

The BBC 6 Music radio presenter had a corporation tax bill of £75,479, which suggests the firm made a profit of around £400,000 in 2017.

The BBC has said she earns between £230,000 and £239,000.

Laverne’s appearances as a host at Glastonbury in 2017 are not revealed as it is made by BBC Studios, which is not obliged to release pay details.

She will take over Desert Island Discs while Kirsty Young, 49, recovers from fibromyalgia, which causes chronic pain.

The BBC said it never comments on individual cases.

But it has admitted it paid 66 of its 96 highest earning presenters £20.8million through personal service firms last year.

That could have helped stars save up to £10million in tax and the BBC up to £2.8million in NI.
