Although it is a frustrating process for cinema-goers, there is method to the madness.

Stephen Basil-Jones, executive Vice President of Sony Pictures Australia, New Zealand and Northern Asia, explained to News.com.au that there are several reasons behind the delay.

Holiday timing is a factor that greatly impacts of the Australian release of a film, particularly for family films from Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks productions.

'If you've got family film like a Pixar film… you've just got to think when families are available to go and see it. It's very difficult to release a film like that outside of holidays and do the business you want to do,' he said.

For this reason, new release movies Small Foot and The House with a Clock in Its Walls have been scheduled for release during school holidays.

Another example of this is the summer school holiday releases of Ralph Breaks the Internet, Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns.

Talent availability is another aspect that affects when a film is released in Australia.

According to the film boss, some territories like Australia or Asia are willing to wait weeks or months for the movie stars to tour the market.

'A country like Australia might wait and say, "no, we'll wait for a couple of weeks so we can get some stars to tour here," he said.

Stephen also noted that it's important for a film to have an opportunity to be seen by audiences - without competition from a highly anticipated movie or a similar release date.

'Giving them that clear window of opportunity and not competing against a similar film is very important because you don't want to cannibalise the same audience.'

He told the publication Sony Pictures get intel on the commercial success of other production houses and their films to find out what's rating well and what audiences are liking.
