New photo Microsoft is warning users not to install rival Google Chrome or Firefox web browsers on Windows

MICROSOFT is testing a rogue pop-up that warns users not to use web browsers from rivals.

The notice appears for Windows users when they try to install the Google Chrome or Mozille Firefox browsers.

The twisted pop-up implied that rival web browsers were more dangerous than Microsoft Edge
Twitter

Instead of completing your download, it prompts you to open Microsoft Edge, the default browser for Windows 10.

The message reads: “You already have Microsoft Edge – the safer, faster browser for Windows 10.”

There’s then a big blue button that says “Open Microsoft Edge” and a smaller grey button that says “Install anyway”.

Below that is a message that says “Don’t want to be warned in the future? Open settings.”

It’s a creepy tactic by Microsoft to get you to stick with its own browser – rather than run off to the competition.

That’s no surprise: just 4.24% of desktop PCs use Microsoft Edge, compared to 67.63% for Chrome and 10.97% for Firefox.

Microsoft’s dodgy pop-up was first spotted by The Verge, and later confirmed to The Sun.

Speaking to The Sun, a Microsoft spokesperson promised that the pop-up is simply a trial.

That means it only appears for people in the Windows Insider Program who want to test new features.

It also means the pop-up may never make it to the public version of Windows 10.

“We’ve tested this functionality with Insiders only,” a Microsoft spokesperson explained.

“The Windows Insider Program enables Microsoft to test different features, functionality and garner feedback before rolling out broadly.

“Customers remain in control and can choose the browser of their choice.”

Web browsers – which ones are the most popular?

Here's the global share your favourite browsers hold on desktop devices in 2018, according to Statcounter...

  1. Google Chrome – 67.63%

  2. Mozille Firefox – 10.97%

  3. Internet Explorer – 7.02%

  4. Apple Safari – 5.13%

  5. Micorosft Edge – 4.24%

  6. Opera – 2.48%

One Twitter user who received the message slammed Microsoft over the tactic.

They wrote: “What kind of slimy marketing cesspool cr*p is this Microsoft?

“I proceed to launch the Firefox installer and Windows 10 pops this up? If I wanted to use your browser, I would.”

Another irate Windows user wrote: “Wow really well done Microsoft…

“This is actually trash. Windows users should be able to install whatever browser they want without being warned.

“Microsoft conducting this kind of behaviour is stupid and wrong. Even Mac doesn’t do this.”

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has been caught out for aggressive tactics.

The company was repeatedly slammed for its desperate bids to trick users into upgrading to Windows 10.

Users complained over how Microsoft appeared to be using software tricks and secret installations to get people to upgrade.

Many users who didn’t want to move to Windows 10 ended up on the software against their will.

Microsoft was successfully sued by a user who claimed her computer was broken by a failed Windows 10 upgrade that she hadn’t consented to.

We’ve asked Microsoft and Google for comment and will update this story with any response.
