JONATHAN Ross boasted that he was the BBC’s first choice to replace Chris Evans on Radio 2 – but turned it down.
The 57-year-old broadcaster told his ITV chat show audience he was “too old” and “rich” for an early morning job.
He said: “They asked me and I said, ‘no. I can’t do early mornings at my age because I’m lazy and rich’.”
But according to the Mirror, his agent has insisted he wasn’t offered the job and the BBC have also denied approaching the TV host.
A source told the newspaper: “The BBC did not approach Jonathan Ross about presenting the Breakfast Show. The new presenter of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show will be announced in due course.”
He left the Beeb in 2010 following a series of high-profile controversies, including the abusive answer phone message that he and Russell Brand left Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs.
During a guest appearance on BBC Radio 6’s The Russell Brand Show broadcast on October 18, 2008, he said: “He f***** your granddaughter” – regarding Russell having sex with Sachs’ granddaughter Georgina Baillie.
Jonathan was suspended for 12 weeks without pay by the BBC.
He opted not to renew his contract with the corporation in July 2010, which covered a film review show, a Saturday Radio 2 slot and his Friday night chatshow.
Speaking at the time, he said: “I think it’s not a bad time for me to move on. It’s possibly not a bad time for them either.”
The dad-of-three has amassed a fortune during his time in the spotlight – and is estimated to be worth £24million.

He has made his money through his TV and radio shows, as well as advertisement and appearances on various shows.
Last week, Chris Evans revealed in an emotional on air announcement that he is leaving after 13 years but has “loved every minute” working on the show.
The 52-year-old later revealed that he is returning to his “spiritual home” and will rejoin Virgin for a third year after his final broadcast in December.
