HEART disease thought to be caused by ageing could be prevented with exercise, say scientists.

People with high blood pressure were up to twice as likely to develop problems with their ticker, a study of 5.4million Brits led by Oxford University found.

Even patients whose blood pressure was not officially “high” but was above the healthy level were around 40 per cent more likely to develop aortic valve diseases (AVD).

The conditions affect one in 20 people aged 75 and over in the UK and can lead to fatal heart failure.

They cause either restricted blood flow due to narrowed heart valves, known as stenosis, or leak blood into the heart when valves do not shut properly, known as regurgitation.

Researchers tested patients’ blood pressure around seven times over an average nine year period and found around 27,000 people developed the conditions by their late 50s to early 60s.

But doctors said people could help prevent heart failure by reducing their blood pressure in middle age through exercising and losing weight.

People with high blood pressure were up to twice as likely to develop some types of heart disease, according to a major study of 5.4 million Brits led by Oxford University.

Prof Kazem Rahimi said: “The study shows serious valvular heart diseases that are common at old age are not simply due to ageing.”
