A GUNMAN went on a deadly rampage in California last night killing five people, including his wife, before hijacking a car and shooting himself.

Police say the shooter, who has not been identified, went to a trucking company in Bakersfield with his wife at around 5.20pm local time.

He was involved in an argument with a man on the premises before pulling out a gun and shooting him, according to ABC 7 News.

The gunman then shot his wife and when another man showed up amid the commotion, he shot him down too, authorities said.

Police say he then wandered to a nearby road where he approached two people near a home and shot them both dead.

He then hijacked a car with a woman and child inside, who managed to escape, and he pulled over to the side of the road where he shot himself in the chest, cops said.
