New photo Family pays tribute to Joel Urhie, 7, killed in Deptford fire as new photos show house gutted in deliberate arson attack

THE family of a seven-year-old boy killed in an arson attack paid heartbreaking tribute to him today – as new pictures emerged of inside the gutted home.

Joel Urhie was “like the sunshine after the rain” said his cousin Tega Majoroh, who had lived with the family and saw him as a little brother.

Student Tega, 18, said: “Coming home to him was like a breath of fresh air. He was always happy and always made others around him happy.

“There are so many memories that I will always treasure – and there will always be a hole in our hearts where his memory will lie.

“He brought so much light to the family without even knowing it. His death has been a tragedy to us all. ”

Joel’s mother Iroroefe, 49, who spent a month in hospital after the devastating blaze, spoke out for the first time as she begged for help catching her son’s killers.

She said: “Joel was the sweetest most caring little boy you could ever meet. He was so intelligent and always curious to learn new things.

“His smile and laugh would light up a room and he was so full of life and energy.”

Police today released pictures of the devastation inside the family home in Deptford, South-East London, as they launched a fresh appeal.

The family also released a video of Joel playing happily on his bike in the hope it will jog someone’s conscience.

Tega said to the killers: “You’ve broken a family, you haven’t just taken a life… you’ve taken something from a family and that person, he can never be replaced by anything.”

She added: “We are appealing to anyone who has a heart and has any knowledge of what happened to call the police and give any information they have.”

Detective Inspector Alison Cole said: “This is one of the most horrific crimes that I’ve dealt with in 26 years.

“This devastating fire claimed the life of an innocent child, a loss his family will never get over, and we desperately need your help to bring those responsible to justice.”

Iroroefe and Joel’s sister Sarah, 19, jumped out of a window to escape the 3.30am blaze on August 7.

Neighbours said the boy was trapped inside as his blood-soaked mother screamed “my son is in there”.

Detectives reportedly probed the theory it was a gang revenge attack targeting Joel’s ex-con older brother Sam, 21.

A friend of the family said Sam broke down at the scene of the fire the next day and said: “It should have been me. Why not me to die.”

Today Det Insp Cole said: “We don’t know or can’t say what the motive is, so we are keeping an open mind and following all lines of inquiry.

“All we know is that that fire was started deliberately near to the front of the house, and Joel very sadly lost his life.

“I’m sure there are people that do know something about what’s happened, and I’m sure there has been some speculation since.

“We need any little pieces of information we can.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 020 8345 3715 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
