A DISABLED man who used his mobility scooter as a ‘battering ram’ to knock over two elderly women on the pavement is facing jail.

Aaron Ali, 40, reversed over Doris Collins, 88, and Joan Benjafield, 90, while they were out shopping in Welling, Kent.

The two pensioners were waiting at a bus stop outside South East Models shop on Upper Wickham Lane on June 14 this year when they were run over by Ali.

Ms Collins and Ms Benjafield were waiting to get on a number 96 bus when the ramp came down and Ali rode off on his scooter.

CCTV footage played in court shows him ride pass the two women then suddenly stop before reversing into Ms Benjafield, sending her flying onto the pavement.

He then rolls forward slightly before reversing into Ms Collins, knocking her over on top of Ms Benjafied.

Ms Collins suffered some cuts to her knee while Ms Benjafield was left with bruises to her calf and ribs.

He was convicted of the other two charges today after a two day trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Ali was also accused of punching 72-year-old Michael Gibson in another random attack in nearby Woolwich High Street on January 2 but was cleared of that charge.

Dressed in a grey prison uniform and sitting in a mobility scooter in the dock, he showed no emotion as his sentencing hearing was adjourned.

The judge, Ms Recorder Emma Goodall said: ‘Mr Ali, you have been convicted of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

‘By adjourning, I give you no indication as to the ultimate outcome but it passes the custody threshold by some distance.

‘A custodial sentence is almost inevitable.’ Prosecutor James Dean had told how Ali used his chair ‘as a battering ram’ against the two old ladies.

‘He is seen to reverse,’ he said.

‘He hits the old lady nearest the curb [Ms Benjafield].

‘She hits the ground.

‘[Mr Ali] stops and goes forward a short distance.

‘Believe it or not he reverses again.’ Mr Gibson was shopping with his son and daughter in Woolwich when he saw Ali coming towards him in his electric wheelchair.

He told the court: ‘He was about two yards away when I saw him. It was somebody in a wheelchair so obviously I moved out of the way.’ Mr Gibson said he took a step to the left to avoid Ali but was then hit in the face.

He said: ‘The blow was upwards, I knew it was a punch because I felt it. Next thing I remember is my son and daughter coming up to me.

‘After I was punched I was down for about 10-20 seconds.’ Mr Gibson got up and said he saw Ali making his way down the road before turning the corner.

He ran after Ali and caught up with him.

‘I said to him ‘what’d you do that for?” He said Ali kept looking ahead and refused to answer him.

‘He was in a wheelchair so I left it at that,’ said Mr Gibson.

Mr Gibson said he lit a cigarette after the incident and part of his front tooth came off.

‘I’ve only got three teeth so I did not need to lose another one,’ he added.

Former psychiatric nurse Ali claimed he suffered a ‘diabetic crash’ before he allegedly rammed two elderly women with his mobility scooter.

Ali, who qualified as a nurse in 2001, claimed he was left disabled for life after he was attacked by a patient while working at Shaftesbury House, Ealing.

Ali denied attacking Mr Gibson and claimed the pensioner assaulted him whilst running at him ‘with a trolley.’

Ali, of Thamesmead, denied three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one of common assault.

He will be sentenced after the conclusion of another trial due to begin 29 October.
