New photo Corrupt bankers craft secret plan to avoid refunding victims of fraud

CRAFTY bankers are trying to avoid refunding victims of fraud, it was revealed last night.

Around £145million was lost in transfers to conmen in the first half of 2018, but only £31million refunded.

Tomorrow, watchdogs will explain what banks must do to stop the cheats.

However, it has emerged that banks are secretly lobbying regulators to say they should not be responsible for the scams that cost families £1million a day.

The biggest five — Lloyds, RBS, Barclays, HSBC and Standard Chartered — made total profits of £9.3billion in the second quarter of this year.

Suzanne Raftery, an ex-Met Police fraud cop, said: “They often don’t care about the devastation these scams cause for people. They care about money.”

“Push payment” fraudsters pose as real firms to trick people into sending them money.

New proposals will see customers given timely warnings if banks notice suspicious activity.

Further measures will also be recommended to stop criminals opening accounts.

Watchdogs propose that banks which fail to meet new minimum standards must refund victims.

The plans emerged in a letter to the Financial Conduct Authority by Stephen Jones, boss of trade body UK Finance, which was leaked to the Daily Mail.

Nicky Morgan, chairwoman of the Commons Treasury committee, said: “Whilst we all have a responsibility to protect ourselves against fraud, financial institutions have a role to play.
