"Many Photos" - A pack of cards is helping kids aged 11 to 18 battle ‘county lines’ drug dealers

TEENS are being educated how to spot friends caught up in county lines by an innovative new pack of cards.

Crimestoppers youth team Fearless have stacked a deck of playing cards with a series of questions that prompt schoolkids to consider scenarios related to people being groomed by drug dealers.

County lines is the name given to tactics used by drug dealers to move their dealing to another location and establish themselves as the main dealer.

Each card poses the recipient with “what would you do” and then they have to explain how they think they’d react in each situation.

Questions on the cards include: “You’ve seen a lot of people coming and going late at night from a house down the road. What would you do?

“Your friend asks you to go with them to a coach station because they have to travel somewhere out of town alone and they ask you not to tell anyone. What would you do?

FROM MAJOR CITIES TO NEW TARGET TOWNS

“Your boyfriend tells you he had been filming you and him having sex. What would you do?”

The charity runs the sessions with 11 to 18 year olds in schools and each card is based on a real county lines experience.

Children as young as 12 have been recruited to run drugs, including heroin and cocaine, from major cities to new target towns.

Fearless manager Kristina Gregory said: “They are a fantastic, flexible resource for group work or one-to-one sessions and allow young people to discuss the outcomes and the different responses they would have – the catch here is that there is no right or wrong answer.

“Might they ‘retaliate’, ‘think it is a quick win to earn easy money fast’ or just accept this is normal teenage life? We want to encourage honest, open discussion.

“Bringing the complex issue of county lines to life through the scenarios on the cards enables teachers, youth workers and sports coaches to challenge stereotypes and encourage young people to think of the choices and consequences of their decisions.

“We hope that the learning and discussion generated from them will help even more young people to think carefully when they are confronted with crime or criminality.”
