"Many Photos" - Travel chaos at London airports as fog cancels flights at Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and City

FLIGHTS are facing severe delays and cancellations this morning as a band of fog descends across parts of the UK.

Airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City have all warned travellers to check their flight details due to the thick cloud.

The delays come after the Met Office released a severe weather warning for fog this morning across the East Midlands, Suffolk, South East and South West.

London City Airport this morning warned: “Due to weather conditions we are experiencing some delays and cancellations.

“Please check with your airline for the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.”

Luton Airport confirmed there were no significant delays to flights this morning but advised passengers to check with their airline.

The dense fog is expected to last at least until 10am.

But the fog hasn’t delayed just air travel, with motorists closer to the ground facing problems.

The Met Office warned of slower journey times with delays to bus and train services, advising road users to avoid travel if possible.

They warned motorists to particularly keep an eye on their speed as fog can give the illusion of moving in slow motion.

WHY DOES FOG AFFECT FLIGHTS?

Fog, snow, ice and crosswinds mean that air traffic controllers have to increase the gap between planes that are landing, reducing the number of aircraft that an airport can manage.

The same weather can make it slower and more difficult for the planes to taxi between runway and terminal building.

As many commercial flights are cruising more than five miles above the ground, they can be affected by different weather than we are experiencing on the ground.

If you are travelling by air in winter, check the weather forecast the night before and plan accordingly. In poor weather allow extra time to get to the airport and have a contingency in mind in case of a weather delay.

Check with your airline if you think a delay is possible. On most occasions the advice will be to arrive at the airport as normal but sometimes that will change.

The Woolwich Ferry, which normally runs across the River Thames in East London, has not opened this morning due to the dense fog.

The Thames Clippers RB1 service is currently operating with delays of around ten to 15 minutes due to fog.

Motorists on the M25 also face delays after a crash closed two lanes at the junction near Leatherhead this morning.

A car and lorry collided, with motorists warned to expect a slow commute.

Luckily, Brits can look forward to the fog clearing today to bring warmer weather – about 10C hotter than average for this time of year.

Scotland’s warm weather already broke records yesterday with temperatures in Aboyne reaching 18.3C – overtaking the previous 17.9C high set in Aberdeen in 1897.

Tropical air has been blown 4,000 miles from the Caribbean to Scotland, with the highs hotter than 16C Alexandria, Egypt.
