"Many Photos" - PM accused of DUMBING down Brexit demands to get quick deal before Commons showdown

THERESA May was accused of dumbing down her Brexit demands to deliver the outlines of a quick new deal before a Commons showdown next week.

It emerged that the PM is no longer insisting on reopening the full Withdrawal Agreement to ensure the controversial Irish backstop is temporary.

Instead, No10 would only say that would be “the simplest way” to secure legally binding changes, and “a range of issues” are now being discussed in Brussels.

EU diplomats also revealed they were working with British officials to draw up a “parallel declaration” to sit alongside the treaty.

It is believed to include a joint review mechanism that could end the backstop within 12 months of it being triggered.

One pro-Remain minister told The Sun: “The PM knows she has to come up with something fast before next week to keep us onside”.

But the development sparked an angry backlash from Brexiteer Tory MPs’ European Research Group, who warned of another major rebellion.

A senior ERG source said: “It is highly likely that both sides in Brussels are about to commit another catastrophic misjudgement”.

BREXIT BACKLASH

ERG shop steward and former Brexit minister Steve Baker told The Sun: “It’s absolutely clear there was a majority for the Brady amendment, replacing the backstop with alternative arrangements.

“It is not clear there is a majority for something else.

“At this crucial point in our country’s history, I am certain we will analyse with the utmost seriousness whatever the Government brings back, but I am not especially hopeful that a side letter or codicil will satisfy all wings of the Conservative Party and DUP.”

Three other prominent Tory Brexiteers also spoke out to insist the PM must deliver “a treaty-level clause that brings about substantive legal changes”.

NO DEAL DECLARATION

If not, Priti Patel, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, and Maria Caulfield said in a joint article for the Conservative Home website that Mrs May should “depart on World Trade Organisation terms” without a deal.

Attorney General Geoffrey and Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay went to Brussels to table the specific legal changes, and will return for more talks with Michel Barnier early next week.

A DexEU spokesman said: “They discussed the positions of both sides and agreed to focus on what we can do to conclude a successful deal as soon as possible.

“It was agreed that talks should now continue urgently at a technical level.”

But EU boss Jean-Claude Juncker claimed he has “something like a Brexit fatigue” and said he is “not very optimistic” that MPs will pass the new deal.

He added: “In the British parliament, every time they are voting, there is a majority against something, there is no majority in favour of something.”

While the EU has made clear a full deal won’t be ready in time for Wednesday’s crunch Commons vote, Mrs May hopes to show enough progress to stave off a Remain ministers rebellion.

As The Sun has revealed, four pro-Remain Cabinet ministers have issued Mrs May with an ultimatum to take No Deal off the table before next Wednesday’s vote or they’ll back Parliament’s bid to seize control of Brexit.

One of them, Amber Rudd, dubbed it “very serious times,” adding cryptically: “I hope we’ll all be able to support the Prime Minister and get the deal through next week”.
