A HERO risked her own life and jumped into a freezing lake to save a drowning dog.

The woman – who has not been identified – plunged into the water and swam 20 metres to rescue the dog in Hull.

An unidentified woman risked her own life to rescue a dog who was drowning in an icy lake in Hull’s East Park on Sunday[/caption]

She had to break chunks of ice to reach the bulldog, whose head was bobbing up and down in the water, bystanders said.

Its elderly owner had been seen looking for the animal, HullLive reported.

The dog emerged unscathed and shook itself dry before returning to its owner in Hull’s East Park on Sunday.

An eyewitness said: “I think an old gentlemen lost his dog and it had jumped in the lake and couldn’t get back out.

“A woman then came along, broke the ice in front of her and jumped in. She swam 20 metres out into the middle of the lake and then brought the dog back with her.

“I heard all the commotion, looked over and just got in the water and broke the ice to get to the dog.”

Bystanders stepped in and wrapped coats and blankets around the woman when she emerged from the icy waters.

Another onlooker said: “At one time I thought she was going under, but she managed to get out of the water. She was very brave.

“She struggled at one point, but got to the dog and back in the end.

“She did really well, it was amazing.”
