"Many Photos" - Gunman shot to death near central bank in Amsterdam and bystander is left injured during shoot-out

A gunman has been shot to death and a bystander has been injured during a shoot-out with Dutch police in Amsterdam.

Dutch police shot and killed a man on a path behind the country's central bank in the city after he pulled a firearm on officers.

Cops had been responding to reports of a man with a gun on an adjoining street when he 'came at the agents with the weapon', police said. 

He died of his injuries while a bystander was also wounded, police said in a statement.

Local television station AT5 published photos of ambulances at the scene and cited eyewitnesses as saying around 20 shots were fired.

Other eyewitnesses reported hearing as many as 40 shots fired during the incident at around 7.15pm. 

Photographer Dennis Brandsma, who lives near the scene of the killing said he saw the gunman lying on the floor after he was shot dead by officers. 

He told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: 'I heard a few bangs, together with my son. Then we immediately realised that it was not fireworks.

'I saw a man lying on the floor. There were agents around him.'

Another resident said he heard 'a series of shots and then a moment later a series again'.

Police shut down the road where a gunman was shot and killed after pulling a weapon at officers in Amsterdam 

He also said it was 'immediately clear that it was serious' when that many gun shots rang out.

Amsterdam police spokesman said there were no signs the incident was terror related, but that that angle of inquiry was still being investigated. 

Ruben Sprong confirmed the suspect was shot when he approached officers with the gun and another person passing by was also wounded.

Sprong added: 'There is no big signal of terror or anything like that from what happened.

He added: 'But of course, everything is unclear. We are still looking into things.'

Photos published by the Dutch media showed local police and military police at the scene.

A spokesperson for De Nederlandsche Bank, told Dutch media that the incident had nothing to do with the bank. 

Police said the area has been cordoned off and the incident while the killing was being investigated.  

No further details were immediately available.
