"Many Photos" - BAFTAs 2019: Joanna Lumley shocks viewers with Ku Klux Klan joke after making 'terrible' quips

Joanna Lumley left fans shocked and cringing after performing a collection of 'terrible jokes' during her opening speech at the 2019 BAFTAs on Sunday night.

The Absolutely Fabulous star, 72, was also faced with an awkward silence after she decided to make a joke about the Ku Klax Klan - the American white supremacist hate group.

Picking out some of the stars in the audience who were nominated for awards, Joanna soon turned her focus to the film BlacKkKlansman - which was up for five gongs.

Pointing out the film's stars Adam Driver and Spike Lee, she said: 'It's an incredible film, it's already won many awards.

'Although to be honest, I'm surprised it did so well at the Klan film festival...'

The 'joke' didn't go down well with the silent audience, with even Joanna adding: 'Yes, alright...'

The awkwardness didn't stop there, with another quip aimed at Stan & Ollie star Steve Coogan leaving the actor visibly cringing.

She referred to an iconic quote used by Laurel and Hardy on film, as she joked: 'Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!'

Taking to Twitter after the 'terrible jokes', fans suggested that she even 'fire' the scriptwriter.

One person said: '...with absolutely TERRIBLE jokes. Fire whoever wrote that intro immediately! #Cringe.' (sic)

A different user put: 'Dreadful jokes met with silence.'

Another show watcher commented: 'Love Joanna Lumley, but it was painful to watch..'

A different account put: 'Terrible - not just bad jokes, terrible delivery. Steve Coogan's face said it all.'

While another fan added: 'Sorry BBC.....it was awful.'

Joanna took over the role of BAFTAs host from Stephen Fry last year, becoming the first woman to present the award ceremony alone.

MailOnline has contacted Joanna's representative for comment.
