Palace sources say the appointment is expected to be announced in days.

Meghan has already met with Rufus Norris, the director of the National Theatre, when they allegedly discussed her role.

The move is seen as a massive statement of intent from the Queen amid rumours of Meghan’s fracturuous start to royal life.

She is seen as a “natural fit” for the role with her experience as a successful actress in Suits.

Meghan also studied her theatre craft at Northwestern University.

It is hoped she will help build bridges with American partners.

The National Theatre has a New York office and spearheaded hit Broadway shows including War Horse and the History Boys.

Meghan will get involved with The American Associates of the National Theatre which contributes £3m each year towards the National’s output.

The thesp institution was founded by Sir Laurence Olivier in 1963, at the Old Vic theatre in London.

In 1976 it relocated to its new home on the South Bank.

Meghan was said to have bonded with director Rufus over their mutual keenness to promote different cultures through the arts.

The Duchess is a keen theatre lover and went with Harry to a benefit performance of hit musical Hamilton.

She also attended the Royal Variety Performance in November.

Meghan is expected to start numerous new charitable roles before she gives birth to their first child later this year.

Both the National and the Palace declined to comment.
