According to a former car thief, he and his partner only needed 20 seconds to break into your car and jack your stuff. He says they always kept an internal clock running with the idea that someone was on the phone with the cops from the second they broke in. They moved so fast that their targets included not just people stopped for long periods, but also cars of people who were stopped for only a few minutes or even just seconds to drop something off. With this in mind, the former car jacker handed over a few tips on how to avoid being a target.
Thieves usually don’t have the time to break into someone’s trunk making it the safest place to store valuables.
This one may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised. The former thief said he and his partner would always avoid cars in well-lit spots.
Most new aftermarket stereos come with removable faceplates. Use them. Thieves will see that it is missing and most often completely avoid your car. If they do break in, according to the thief, when they see the missing faceplate they’ll often abandon the theft all together.
Second to your trunk, hiding valuables under your seat is the best course. The former thief said most thieves will take a quick look into your car before breaking in. If no valuables are visible, they’ll move on.
Tinted windows make it harder for a thief to see into your car making it all the more likely they’ll skip it all together.
This tip is particularly for people driving very expensive cars. Thieves will often monitor your daily routines in order to see when the best time to steal your car is. They might even use it to learn when you’ll be away from home and hit your house. Semi-regularly check your car for any sort of GPS tracker.
According to the former bandit, if a thief breaks into your car and finds nothing but documents with your name on them, he may then attempt to break into your home since he knows you’re not home. Even if someone else is home at that time, you may become a target for a future home invasion.
Window stickers and blinking lights will scare off most thieves. The thief recommends putting a sticker in your window even if you don’t have a security system in your car.
If you’re in the market for a new car, check out the National Insurance Bureau’s listing of most stolen card and avoid the models on the list. There is a reason thieves are hitting these cars most frequently.
First of all, this is no damn help if you lock yourself out of the car. Second, thieves will immediately look for any spare keys and use them to simply drive off. Imagine leaving a spare house key in your car and also documents with your address on them. No bueno.
They may slightly increase your electricity bad, but the former thief says most thieves will completely avoid and home or car that is hit directly with a light. He does caution, however, that you put the light high enough that the thief can’t just unscrew the bulb.
We almost all have a habit of keeping spare change in the car. If this money is visible it becomes almost impossible to ignore for a thief. If you must keep spare money in your car, make sure it’s somewhere that’s no visible from the outside.
