IT was great to get off the mark for 2019 with a double on a couple of nice horses at Wetherby yesterday.
That puts me on 52 for the year with a strike-rate of 25 per cent but I’m not one of those jockeys who goes out each season chasing numbers. It’s more about riding each individual horse to do as well as they can.

Luckily, all our horses seem to be running well and I get to ride some really nice ones.
Clarendon Street is certainly one of those. I got into all sorts of trouble on him at Warwick so it was nice to ride him to victory yesterday.
He’s one to watch out for in the future as I think he’ll have improved again for that win.
Today is not particularly inspiring coming so soon after the top racing over Christmas but I’ve got three rides at Wincanton and one of them is pretty nice.
AUSTIN’S POWERS Top striker Charlie Austin nets racing win as Another Batt scores in Dubai
That’s Kupatana (2.05) – I like her a lot. She won at Kempton when I was out with a broken thumb and then I rode her when she was second behind a nice horse of Gary Moore’s called Knocknanuss at Newbury’s big meeting just over a month ago.
I thought that day she wanted stepping back up to 2m4f so she should go well. She came a cropper at Wincanton on Boxing Day but I’m not worried about her jumping.
If she puts up another performance like she did at Kempton she will go very close. The other two are for Ben Pauling and they’re both having their second runs after wind operations.
I think I’ve mentioned before that breathing problems are more of a mental block.

The first time they run after an op they think it’s going to catch them out then the second time they realise it’s fine. You can ride them through that spot when they think it’s going to hurt.
The better ground also helps as they don’t have to work as hard so they don’t have to put so much pressure on their breathing. They tend to enjoy a bit more.
Monk’s View (1.35) didn’t jump very well for my old mate Dave Bass on his hurdles debut but I’ve been told he’s had a good bit of time being educated since then. Hopefully, his jumping will be alright and the longer trip might suit him.
I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed it all goes well and we get a clear round.

Marten (2.40) went chasing at the start of the season but it didn’t work out. He has got some quite nice form in bumpers and when he started off over hurdles.
Ben’s put blinkers on him for the first time so hopefully they might make some difference.
We’re on a bit of a recovery mission with him but on his old form he would have a chance. It would just be nice to see him run well – if we could get into the frame I’d be very happy.
The big race of the day is the Unibet Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown. My boss Nicky Henderson looks to have a great chance of winning this Grade 1 for a sixth time with Rathhill.
GRAND PLANS Your in-depth preview to Saturday’s Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown
I was very impressed with the way he won at Newbury last month.
I rode another nice novice of ours called Pistol Whipped to finish third but Ratthill came past us like a good horse and really ground it out.
The track will suit and he won’t mind the ground too much – it’s sure to be very testing, dead ground.
It’s already quite gluey and they had the frost covers on overnight that just makes it even stickier.

To achieve her kick-ass figure, Hayden – who plays cheerleader Claire Bennet in Heroes – follows the ‘quartering’ rule. She eats only a quarter of the food on her plate, then waits 20 minutes before deciding whether she needs to eat again.
Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
