A sheep has been spotted standing on top of a truck as the vehicle stopped at the side of a motorway.

The adventurous animal was filmed by a passing motorist after the HGV driver pulled onto the hard shoulder.

Footage of the sheep was captured in New Zealand and showed the farmyard beast peering over the edge of the lorry as traffic passes by the busy road.

The lorry had its hazard warning lights flashing as it parked up in Auckland.

The sheep was seen standing on top of the lorry as the vehicle was parked at the side of a motorway on Auckland New Zealand 

As a pedestrian walked by he looked up at the lost sheep with confusion. 

Ada Rangiwai was passing in her car when she saw the sheep on top of a truck on the city's southern motorway at around 5pm on Sunday.

She posted the video on Facebook that shows the driver pulled over onto the side of the motorway as the car Rangiwai was travelling in approached the scene.

She told Newshub: 'We saw the sheep on top of the roof and I'm like, "oh my god, I have to record this, this is gold".

'I've got no idea how it got there. We were just driving and saw it. Only in bloody New Zealand.

It is not known how the sheep got on the roof of the truck but it is being investigated by the New Zealand authorities and animal welfare charities

'I don't understand how the sheep got on the roof. It was surfing. There must have been a hole in the roof and it climbed on its mates.'

It is not known how or why the sheep was on the roof of the truck but the incident is being investigated by the SPCA (Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Peter Hyde, a spokesman for the MPI told Stuff: 'This is a highly unusual incident and not representative of how sheep are transported in New Zealand.

'Both [MPI and SPCA] have concerns as the sheep could have fallen seriously injuring itself.'  

The truck was branded as a a livestock transport company called Heikell Transport, so there could have been more sheep inside the truck.

A Heikell Transport spokesman said the company was yet to 'catch up' with the driver because he was away on Monday.
