THERESA May brutally slapped down her Foreign Secretary yesterday for comparing the EU to the Soviet Union – in a bid to appease furious EU leaders.
She gave Jeremy Hunt a humiliating history lesson as he faced further condemnation from Brussels for using his Tory conference speech to claim the EU’s attempt to punish Britain for leaving the EU was like the USSR trying to stop its citizens leaving.

But yesterday Mr Hunt doubled down on his controversial comparison – and hit back at the chorus of EU leaders who have condemned his remarks.
He told Bloomberg TV: “They need to understand that we are very angry.
“If the EU’s view is that every time we put constructive views on the table all they have to do is say no come back with something different that’s not a negotiation.”
Mr Hunt added: “They have got to be very careful with their negotiating approach.
Jean-Claude Juncker’s deputy Frans Timmermans said Jeremy Hunt had insulted a number of EU member states“If they really think that the only outcome that’s acceptable from these talks is to punish Britain for wanting to leave the club, then that’s not consistent with European ideals.”
But the PM told BBC Breakfast: “As I sit around that table in the European Union, there are countries there who used to be part of the Soviet Union.
“They are now democratic countries. I can tell you that the two organisations are not the same.”

Jean-Claude Juncker’s deputy Frans Timmermans accused Mr Hunt of “insulting” EU states that were formerly part of the USSR.
European Parliament’s Brexit negotiator Guy Verhofstadt demanded he apologise to former Soviet citizens, while one Belgian MEP accused Mr Hunt of using the “rhetoric of the far-right”.
And Manfred Weber, a leading contender to be the next EU Commission chief, said: “Now we experience a new level of populism when the foreign minister of Great Britain, Hunt, is comparing the EU with the Soviet Union. Mr Hunt, you should apologise for what you said.”
