She's the Today Extra host, who is always glamorous and preened to perfection on camera.

But on Sunday, Sonia Kruger, 53, recalled the awkward moment that fans failed to recognise her because she wasn't wearing any makeup.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, the blonde beauty said she was approached by Aussie tourists during a trip to Butchart Gardens, Canada but they initially didn't realise who she was.

'There is this place called Butchart Gardens on Victoria Island which has become a major tourist attraction and this bus load of Aussies turned up,' Sonia recalled. 

She said a group of retirees stopped her and asked whether she had seen Sonia Kruger after hearing whispers that the TV personality was also at the tourist hub.

'I said 'yeah that's me' and this man was mortified and said 'oh sorry you look really different without makeup,' Sonia said.

The popular presenter, however, admitted that she was still wearing make-up but conceded that The Voice is very high-end glamour. 

'When you are out doing the tourist thing people don't realise that it's me,' she said.  

It comes after Sonia revealed on Today Extra last month that a younger colleague of hers once called her 'toots' during a professional conversation.

Sonia was debating the issue alongside co-host David Campbell, and guests Prue MacSween and Andrew Bucklow. 

The panel was debating whether it was suitable to use terms of endearment such as 'babe', 'chicks' and 'girls' in 2018. 

'I have had a younger colleague call me 'toots', which was a little bit, um...[strange]' Sonia told the panel. 

Sonia first started her career as a model. 

However, she rose to fame as Tina Sparkle in Baz Luhrmann's 1992 hit film, Strictly Ballroom. 

Her acting career also includes a role in Channel Nine's Doctor Doctor.

Sonia has also hosted a number of reality shows including The Voice and Dancing With The Stars from 2004 to 2011.
