JOSE MOURINHO’S time as Manchester United manager is almost up after losing the faith of senior boardroom figures.
He could even be sacked by next week if United lose Saturday’s home Premier League clash with struggling Newcastle.
All that may save him is the lack of a viable alternative with ex-Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane understood to be distancing himself from the job.
The board were desperate to back Mourinho after what they saw as two good seasons under one of the most successful managers in the game.
He won the League Cup and Europa League in his first season and finished second in the Premier League last season and reached the FA Cup Final.
But the dramatic slide the side has gone into since the start of this season has startled everyone at the club.
United have had their worst start to a campaign since 1989, been knocked out the Carabao Cup by Championship side Derby County and could not beat mid-table La Liga side Valencia at home in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The 3-1 defeat at West Ham last Saturday was the final straw for some.
The off-field problems between Mourinho and the players is also seen to be harming the club’s image.
United legends like Paul Scholes have also turned on Mourinho.
Scholes said Mourinho was embarrassing the club with his public pronouncements and was surprised he was still in a job after the West Ham defeat.

The atmosphere in the ground is a major worry with the team booed off at the final whistle on Tuesday night.
SunSport revealed on Monday how Mourinho is already becoming resigned to his fate after a call from Zidane.
The Frenchman rang him to make it clear he was not plotting behind his back but only that his representatives had asked if he would be interested if the job came up.
Mourinho, however, took that as United had contacted Zidane’s representatives and are already making contingency plans for his departure.
