New photo Bristol City 1-2 Sheffield Wednesday: Lucas Joao fires visitors into play-off places

Lucas Joao found there is just no satisfying some people even though his goals propelled Sheffield Wednesday into the Championship play-off places.

The Portuguese forward may have been the toast of the visitors' dressing room at Ashton Gate after his second-half brace sent Wednesday into sixth place in the table.

But in the room which staged his manager Jos Luhukay's post-match press conference, it was a different story as it emerged the substitute would have to raise his game to win over the doubting Dutchman.

'When he came into the game he had a difficult time but the goals gave him inspiration,' Luhukay said.

'They were both good goals but he had also lost a lot of balls one-against-one and so he must also make progress himself.

'He needs to work hard on the ball, out of possession he must learn to work in both directions to be important for the team.

'When he does that he can play from the beginning but if not he must wait and have patience.'

Joao made the most of an earlier than expected opportunity to get on Luhukay's good side in the 18thminute of this contest when Steven Fletcher was withdrawn due to a back injury.

There was little to suggest he would knock City out of their stride as the hosts went for the kill early on, aiming for a repeat of last season's 4-0 humiliation of the Yorkshire side.

Famara Diedhiou failed to make the most of an excellent chance before Lloyd Kelly hit a post and Adam Webster made a meal of the rebound. 'They dominated and created a few chances but forgot to score,' Luhukay added.

Joao, 25, showed them how to do it by putting Wednesday in command with two quick-fire goals.

First, following goalkeeper's Cameron Dawson punt forward, he outwitted centre-half Nathan Baker before coolly beating Niki Maenpaa with a low finish from 12 yards in the 62ndminute.

Less than two minutes later, the City defence was all over the place and Joao led Webster a merry dance before smashing a powerful shot beyond Maenpaa from 15 yards out.

Despite plenty of energy, City struggled to find a way back into the game but then Wednesday's Josh Onomah handed them a lifeline through what Luhukay called a 'stupid penalty' by fouling Callum O'Dowda in the 79thminute and Matty Taylor smashed home the spot-kick.

That was as good as it got for the Robins and later manager, Lee Johnson, went on the offensive, claiming the first goal should have been ruled out.

'It was sub-standard officiating - he was three yards offside,' Johnson said.

'An individual has let us down and it wasn't one of my players. It's really frustrating.'

Matty Taylor reduced the arrears by smashing home a 79th-minute penalty after Callum O'Dowda had been brought down by Josh Onomah. But, despite frantic late efforts, the hosts could not conjure up an equaliser in a game that could have gone either way.

Both sides passed up golden scoring opportunities in the first half. The first fell to Wednesday after 10 minutes when Adam Reach got in behind defender Lloyd Kelly only for his volley to be blocked by advancing goalkeeper Maenpaa.

Moments later there was an even better chance for City as a wayward defensive pass left Famara Diedhiou all alone in a central position inside the box. The striker looked surprised not to be flagged offside and failed to beat goalkeeper Dawson, who spread himself to save a low drive.

City were on top and Kelly sent a left-foot shot across goal and against the far post from an angle after 15 minutes. In the goalmouth scramble that followed, both Nathan Baker and Webster had efforts blocked.

Jamie Paterson's long-range shot brought another save from Dawson in the 33rd minute but Wednesday were starting to click as an attacking force.
