"Many Photos" - Virgin Media reveals ‘ultra-fast’ WiFi that downloads 4K movies in SEVEN seconds – but you’ll be waiting a while to get it

VIRGIN MEDIA is promising ludicrously fast 8Gbps broadband speeds for homes of the future – about 216 times speedier than the UK average.

It comes after a series of successful trials proved that the network can handle supercharged download speeds, which experts say will revolutionise the way we use the internet.

Virgin Media is promising “ultra-fast” WiFi speeds in the future

Brits currently enjoy extremely poor internet speeds at home.

According to the latest Ofcom report, the average download speed is jut 46.2Mbps – and upload speeds are even worse, at 6.2Mbps.

Virgin Media has trialled next-gen “ultra-fast” speeds in the UK however, and claims to have wiped the floor with the UK average.

But exactly how fast is 8Gbps?

It takes eight “megabits” (Mb) to make a “megabyte” (MB).

So if you’re downloading at 42.6Mbps (megabits per second), you’ll download 5.33 megabytes of data every second.

Alternatively, a single megabyte takes about 0.19 seconds to download.

But at a speed of 8Gbps, you’re downloading a gigabyte of data every second.

A gigabyte is 1,000 megabytes, so that’s significantly faster.

To put this into perspective, Netflix says that an hour of 4K video sucks up 7GB of data.

So it would take an 8Gbps connection just 7 seconds to download that entire 4K video.

But with the UK average download speed, it’d take you about 25 minutes.

“Whether it’s streaming UHD movies on Netflix, playing the latest games online or video conferencing, faster internet connections have changed our lives immeasurably over the past decade,” said Richard Sinclair, Executive Director of Connectivity at Virgin Media.

“As speed leaders, Virgin Media is not going to stand still – this trial is about looking ahead to the next decade and beyond.

A single person might struggle to use up speeds this fast, but in households where lots of people are doing lots of things online at once, it’ll help massively.

“It’s like water pressure in the home. You turn on the tap downstairs, but you can still use the shower upstairs,” Richard told The Sun.

“We’re removing the dependency on the pipes in the home.”

Virgin Media’s new speeds could be a decade away, sadly

The trial took place in the homes of existing Virgin Media customers in Papworth, Cambridgeshire.

It’s the same place where Virgin Media tested its first 1Gbps full-fibre-to-the-premises connectivity back in 2014.

The new system works by modifying existing data centres and providing users with custom-built routers, allowing for super fast speeds.

When the system rolls out more widely, it’ll change the way we use the internet, according to Tom Cheesewright, an applied futurist.

“Each new leap in internet speeds has spurred a new round of innovation in digital services,” Tom explained.

“Today we are just starting to glimpse the immersive communication and entertainment opportunities that speeds like this will enable, bringing the physical and digital worlds together into a rich, interactive environment.”

Tom told The Sun that he expects the majority of future internet demand will be from “mixed reality” apps that overlay computer images onto the real world around us – a bit like Pokémon Go or Snapchat filters.

And although Virgin Media declined to say how long it would be before customers received 8Gbps speeds in the home, Tom predicted that it would take as few as five years – and told The Sun it would “definitely” happen within a decade.

Sadly, there’s no word on an exact release date or cost, so Brits will have to make do with their lowly download speeds for a while yet.

And don’t panic, but the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 is rumoured to miss out on 5G tech.
