"Many Photos" - UK weather: Heavy showers and up to 60mph gusts will batter Britain

Britain is set to be hit by gale-force winds and rain today as a band of wet weather sweeps across the country.

Wind and rain is set to sweep across the country with five flood alerts in place across Somerset, Cambridgeshire and Bristol.

The Met Office is urging commuters to take care on wet roads this morning, while the Environment Agency has warned homeowners to brace themselves for rising river levels.

Wind gusts of 59 mph were recorded at Berry Head in Devon yesterday and forecasters say winds could reach similar speeds along the coast today.

Met Office forecasters say the UK will turn wet and windy later today as a band of showers move across from the west, with strong winds and rain affecting much of the country this evening.

From Thursday to Sunday, the UK is likely to be wet and windy with gales at times, and snow confined to northern hills.

Sunshine and showers are likely by Saturday, mainly in the west, some heavy with thunder.

Temperatures are expected to be around average for the time of year, according to the Met Office.

The Environment Agency has issues five flood alerts covering east Somerset rivers, Hail Weston Ford in Cambridgeshire, the mid Bristol Avon area, the River Blackwater and The Cove Brook and south east Somerset rivers.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said: 'Tuesday will start dry and end up wet for much of the UK, with a band of wet weather coming in from the west.

'There is still a lot of fog at the moment across central and eastern parts of England, but rain is set to spread eastwards over central and western parts, which will see rain and winds pick up.

'Gales in the north west could see winds speeds reach around 50mph. But temperatures will be near or even above normal this week, with highs of around 12C - though it will be turning colder on Thursday across the country.

'Areas of higher ground in the west could see 20-25mm of rain in total, but this is one to watch because if it keeps coming we will need to watch the rain fall total on Friday - it could turn wet and windy due to a deep area of low pressure pushing in from the Atlantic.'

But bookmakers have now slashed odds on February 2019 being the coldest on record.

With temperatures still dropping, the bookies cut odds from 3/1 to 5/2 over the weekend on this month breaking weather records.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: 'It's looking increasingly likely this goes down as a record-breaking month on the weather front.'
