"Many Photos" - Nine in ten Britons backing The Mail's war on litter by signing up to the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean has won the overwhelming support of the public, with nine in ten backing the army of volunteers helping to clear the country of litter.

A survey shows people believe cleaning up our countryside, towns and coasts is an ever-more important priority.

It also found that 42 per cent are now prepared to pick up litter rather than just walk on by.

The survey shows a rising awareness of the damage to animals and marine wildlife caused by carelessly discarded rubbish.

More than three-quarters say they are actively trying to cut down on their use of single-use plastics.

Nearly 90 per cent say they are aware of the impact of the plastics – and praise those who have volunteered to give up their time to join the spring clean between March 22 and April 23, saying they are ‘vital for helping to protect the environment in the UK’.

The figures from Ipsos-Mori came as active support for Keep Britain Tidy’s anti-litter campaign soars.

Just a week since the launch of the drive, more than 37,400 have pledged their precious time to help rid their communities of the scourge of waste. We hope many more of the Mail’s caring readers will join in events across the country with other volunteers, helping to push the overall figure above half a million and making it Britain’s biggest environmental campaign.

The Great British Spring Clean has won the backing of Prince William, Prime Minister Theresa May, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and even the United Nations. Other public figures including TV chefs Mary Berry and Prue Leith, Bear Grylls and Jeremy Paxman have praised the initiative.

Mrs Berry said: ‘I think the Daily Mail has got it right and we must all support it. We really must get rid of all this litter. If you stop in a lay-by or you see litter, stop, put on a pair of Marigolds if you like and collect it, take it home and recycle it.’

The Daily Mail is proud to have spearheaded public awareness on this issue.

This paper has campaigned against single-use plastic for more than a decade – and successfully led campaigns to introduce a levy on plastic bags, and cut out the use of toxic plastic microbeads in cosmetics.

The awareness of the litter problem received a huge boost from Sir David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II wildlife documentary series.

Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: ‘These findings are great news for the environment. As the UK’s leading anti-litter charity seeing that nearly 90 per cent of people support our heroic volunteers is everything. We love our work, fighting litter and its causes everywhere people live, work and play and to know the public do too is a fantastic boost.

‘The level of support for this year’s Great British Spring Clean from both our partners and the public has been astonishing. Together, we can realise our ambition to create a litter-free environment for everyone to enjoy.’

Ipsos-Mori chief executive and Keep Britain Tidy trustee Ben Page said: ‘The British are now more worried about packaging than most other countries.

‘Programmes like Blue Planet II and the debate in the media about single-use plastics seem to have been a catalyst for raising awareness and helping to change behaviour on littering.’

The Great British Spring Clean is the country’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign and was first run in 2017. Last year, despite the Beast from the East, more than 371,566 #LitterHeroes volunteers took part including more than 126,651 school children.

Last year the Daily Mail helped to organise the Great Plastic Pick Up with Keep Britain Tidy, in which more than 20,000 volunteers cleared litter over a single weekend.
