"Many Photos" - Lancashire adventure seeker abseils into active volcano before doing a HANDSTAND on the edge

You could be forgiven for thinking this adventure seeker was having a LAVA when he decided to abseil backwards into an active volcano - before doing a handstand on the edge.

Daredevil Christopher Horsley descended into three lava-filled craters - one of which has never been explored before - during a two month expedition in the South Pacific last year.

The 26-year-old, from Ormskirk, West Lancashire, faced molten rock of more than 700 degrees Celcius to rappel inside the Benbow, Marum and Ambrym volcanic craters on the island of Vanuatu.

Mr Horsley said: 'I have always been enthused by adventure. When I was a teen aiming for a path in the Air Force I joined the cadets, where I found my passion for outdoor adventure and climbing'

All three volcanoes are still active - including the one Mr Horsley showed off his gymnastic skills on - but Benbow hasn't erupted since 1913.

Mr Horsley said: 'This is the first time that all three craters with active lava lakes have been accessed.

'I am pioneering new and safer ways to access erupting volcanoes safely.

'I have always been enthused by adventure. When I was a teen aiming for a path in the Air Force I joined the cadets, where I found my passion for outdoor adventure and climbing.

Mr Horsley insists that his stunt was completely safe because of the rope techniques he used. He said: 'Utilising tension lines and high angle rescue techniques to operate in such harsh environments is our speciality'

'Since the age of 21 I have been pushing the limits of travel, to the point where I was adopted by a tribe in Papua New Guinea.

'Adventures like this have built me to respect the crazy world we live in.'

Mr Horsley is an expedition leader and photographer for Ultimate Volcano Expeditions and currently lives in Amsterdam.

And despite the seemingly terrifying nature of his stunt, he insisted it was completely safe due to the rope techniques used.

He added: 'I have a passion for capturing volcanoes, tribes and the world's most unique and elusive phenomena.

'Utilising tension lines and high angle rescue techniques to operate in such harsh environments is our speciality.

'You think of it, we will rope it.'
