"Many Photos" - Hatton Garden suspect ‘Basil’ denies role in £25m heist as jurors told to ignore films about notorious raid

A HATTON Garden suspect known as ‘Basil’ has denied being involved in the £25million heist – as jurors were today told to ignore films about the notorious raid.

Michael Seed, 58, is accused of being part of the robbery, which saw jewels, gold ingots and cash looted from safety deposit boxes.

He was also allegedly had a role in a £1million raid on Chatila jewellers in Mayfair during the August Bank Holiday weekend of 2010.

Jurors being selected to try Seed at Woolwich Crown Court were today told to ignore any dramatisations of the famous Hatton Garden raid.

Judge Christopher Kinch, QC, said: “The point is to flush out someone who may have a particular obsession with the reports or indeed someone who has perhaps worked on one of the books or films.”

HOLLYWOOD FILM

The burglary, which took place over the 2015 Easter Bank Holiday Weekend, was turned into a blockbuster film starring Michael Caine and Ray Winstone.

King of Thieves premiered on September 14 and was widely advertised on London Underground before its release.

A list of questions given to potential jurors asked whether they recognised a list of names – John Kenneth Collins, Daniel Jones, Terence George Perkins, Brian Reader, Carl Wood, William Lincoln, Hugh Doyle, and Charles Matthews.

QUESTIONS TO JURY

They were also asked whether they have any connection to London City Metal or Chatila Jewellers.

The list said: “The Hatton Garden burglary and the trial that followed were widely publicised in the press, on TV, on the internet and in the cinema.

“Did you or anyone you know lose property during the burglary of the Hatton Garden Safety Deposit at 88-90 Hatton Garden. I am sure everyone will be aware of that incident?

“Are you or have you in the past worked for the flying squad, that is the team of police officers who investigated this, and the related cases and we would need to know if anyone had that sort of connection?”

Seed, of Islington, North London, denies two counts of conspiracy to burgle and one count of conspiracy to conceal or disguise criminal property.

A trial, expected to last six weeks, will begin on Monday.
