EUROSTAR has been hit by a series of cancellations after bad weather caused cracks in the windows of its new £700million fleet.

Six services between London and Paris and Brussels were halted on Wednesday with a further seven halted up to the end of the weekend.

Traveller David Lewis, 39, claims he was told by one employee that the E320 Siemens trains are not “robust” enough in winter and five of the 12 strong fleet are having repairs.

France in particular was hit by freezing conditions and deep snow at the end of last month – the first real bad weather test for the futuristic 200 mph units.

Mr Lewis, of Holloway, north London, said: “I was taking my girlfriend away for a Valentine weekend when we were told out service back was cancelled.

“The alternative offered would have ruined our weekend. When I went to St Pancras in person I managed to get a more acceptable return journey.

“It was then customer services confided that the windows were cracking.”

A spokesman for Eurostar said: “It’s not unusual for any type of train running at high speed to sustain some damage during bad weather.

“Following the weather conditions in recent weeks, particularly in France, we have introduced a revised timetable to allow our teams to carry out routine maintenance to make any necessary repairs.”

He claimed the damage was “not specific” to the E320 fleet.
